The following policy outlines our school’s program for the setting and subsequent correction of homework. It is our aim to try to develop in our students, a responsible attitude towards study in their own time.
At Toogoolawah State School we believe it is important to set a policy which will help students establish a balanced lifestyle as well as allow time for activities with family and friends.
The guidelines for the different age groups are as follows:
Prep - Generally students will not be set homework
Lower school - Could be up to, but generally not more than 1 hour per week
Upper school - Could be up to, but generally not more than 2 hours per week
For our younger students, it is important that parents are involved in reading books to them and encouraging them in a range of activities.
For the older students, parents can help them balance the amount of time spent completing homework, watching television, playing sport and chores etc.
Good communication between teachers, students and parents is also very important to ensure students reach their full potential.
It is the responsibility of parents to assist the students through the set learning activities which may be made up in part by:
Lower school - Reading, Spelling, Number facts
Upper school - Reading, Spelling, Number facts, projects, assignments, research, extra curricula activities such as practicing for Instrumental music, athletics
While homework is encouraged it is not a compulsory element, It is however based on the notion of practice and reinforcement of current class learning.
